FDA Investigates New Salmonella Outbreak, leads to Recall of Contaminated Cinnamon Applesauce

  • Reading time:1 mins read

The Food and Drug Administration has identified a new outbreak of Salmonella infections, with 11 reported cases as of April 10. However, the agency hasn’t disclosed the locations of the affected individuals or the specific food items involved. Traceback efforts are underway, but details regarding the implicated foods haven’t been released.

Additionally, the FDA is investigating elevated lead levels in cinnamon used in applesauce products marketed for children. This investigation arises from 519 reported cases across 44 states as of April 10. Consequently, cinnamon applesauce sold under the Wanabana, Schnucks, and Weis brands has been recalled. The affected applesauce was produced by Astrofoods in Ecuador, with the cinnamon supplied by a third party. Officials suspect that the cinnamon may have been intentionally contaminated with lead to increase its weight and profitability.
