In 2020, elevated patulin levels in some Australian apple juice products prompted recalls, raising concerns about consumer safety.
Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) conducted a survey in 2021-2022, assessing almost 300 apple products for patulin concentrations. While variability was observed, the estimated dietary exposure to patulin was deemed low, leading FSANZ to conclude that no regulatory measures were necessary.
FSANZ recommends industry quality control practices, emphasizing good agricultural and manufacturing practices, and ongoing monitoring for potential patulin contamination in apple juice. Additionally, new rules for businesses handling unpackaged, ready-to-eat food have been introduced in Australia, emphasizing the need for qualified food safety supervisors in various establishments by December 8, 2024.
