Growing Number of Children Linked to Lead Poisoning Outbreak Associated with Applesauce

  • Reading time:1 mins read

Federal officials are receiving reports of elevated lead levels in children, with 64 adverse events reported in children aged 6 and younger across 27 states.

Three applesauce products, including Wanabana brand nationwide and online, and Schnuck’s and Weis brands regionally, have been recalled. An import alert on cinnamon products from Ecuador, identified as the source of the contamination, has been initiated to block their entry at U.S. ports.

Consumers are urged to check their homes for the recalled products, as elevated lead levels can have long-term health effects, especially in children. The FDA continues its investigation in collaboration with Ecuadorian authorities, emphasizing the importance of discarding these products due to their potential health risks.
