Contaminated parsley imported from southern Europe has caused over 150 E. coli cases in Sweden. Outbreaks occurred in Jönköping and Stockholm, with conference attendees and restaurant customers affected. Enterotoxigenic E.coli (ETEC) and Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) were identified, and initial food testing didn’t reveal the cause.
The Swedish Food Agency (Livsmedelsverket) is utilizing Europe Union alert systems, informing Italian authorities to investigate the producer. The Public Health Agency of Sweden (Folkhälsomyndigheten) has sequenced isolates, revealing a common source in both municipalities. Identifying the contaminated parsley’s source is crucial for managing the outbreak.
Health officials are investigating the contamination source, while symptoms of ETEC and EPEC infections include diarrhea, cramping, dehydration, and fever. Swift actions are necessary to prevent further cases and ensure food safety. This incident adds to recent outbreaks in Sweden, emphasizing the ongoing importance of tracing and addressing the sources of foodborne illnesses.
