Kratom, a Southeast Asian tropical tree, lacks proper legal regulation in the U.S., leading to unregulated sales online and in stores. Self-treatment of various conditions with kratom is common, but the American Kratom Association (AKA) argues that the lack of Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulation puts consumers at risk.
The AKA urges the FDA to responsibly regulate kratom, offering “Consumer Guidelines for Kratom Use” to help users navigate the marketplace safely. The association calls for FDA intervention to prosecute vendors making illegal claims and address safety concerns related to super-concentrated kratom products lacking proper labeling.
Without FDA intervention, the unregulated kratom market allows for misleading claims and unsafe products, fostering competition in super-concentrated kratom. The AKA contends that the FDA’s failure to regulate appropriately leads to consumer confusion, significant risks, and a narrative that may eventually support a complete ban on kratom products. The association emphasizes the need for immediate FDA action to protect consumers and establish responsible regulations for kratom use.
