World Food Safety Day 2025: Celebrating ‘Science in Action’

  • Reading time:2 mins read

Every year on June 7, we recognize World Food Safety Day (WFSD)—and in 2025, we mark its seventh edition. This global observance raises awareness and drives real action to prevent, detect, and manage foodborne risks. The ultimate goal: to protect public health, ensure safe and fair trade, promote responsible food production, and support sustainable development.

World Food Safety Day reminds us of four key objectives:

  • Increase public awareness of food safety issues
  • Demonstrate how foodborne illnesses can be prevented with proper practices
  • Encourage collaboration across sectors to improve food safety systems
  • Promote practical solutions that enhance food safety for all

Food safety is everyone’s responsibility. Whether you’re a producer, processor, transporter, distributor, retailer, chef, or consumer, each link in the supply chain plays a critical role. Hazards can arise at any point—and when they do, the consequences can range from household food spoilage to large-scale outbreaks and global recalls.

This year’s theme, “Food Safety: Science in Action,” spotlights the indispensable role of science in keeping our food safe. From a power outage at home to a recall of contaminated imports, science is the tool that helps us understand, manage, and prevent risks at every level.

Science informs every step of the journey—from farm to fork. Evidence-based research drives the standards, practices, and technologies that protect millions of people every day. Scientists continuously assess both known and emerging threats, advise regulators and food businesses, and empower consumers to make informed choices.

Without science, ensuring food safety in today’s complex, interconnected food systems wouldn’t be possible.

On this World Food Safety Day, let’s celebrate the essential contribution of science in safeguarding our food—and with it, the health of people, economies, and the planet.
